High Court Seeks Protection for Live-in Women

The Madras High Court has expressed concern over the growing number of live-in relationships in India, calling the trend a “cultural shock” to society. The court said that women in such relationships should be protected by giving them the legal status of a wife.

In a recent ruling, Justice S. Srimathy noted that live-in relationships are now happening widely across the country. She observed that many young women choose such relationships believing they are modern and progressive.

However, the judge pointed out that after some time, many women realise that live-in relationships do not give them the legal protection that marriage provides. Issues such as financial security, social recognition, and legal rights often arise when the relationship breaks down.

The court stressed that women should not be left unprotected simply because they chose to live with a partner without formal marriage. It said the law should look at ways to safeguard their rights and dignity, especially when they have lived together for a long period.

The observation has once again brought focus on the need for legal protection for women in live-in relationships and the challenges they face in the absence of clear laws.
