India Lose 1-3 to Belgium in Hockey
In men’s hockey, India started their 2025-26 FIH Pro League with a 1-3 defeat against Belgium at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela yesterday. The match was competitive, but Belgium managed to edge past India with strong performances in the final quarter.
Belgium’s goals were scored by Nelson Onana, Thomas Crols, and Arno Van Dessel, while Shilanand Lakra scored India’s lone goal. The first three quarters were closely contested, with both teams showing strong defense and attacking play. The score was 1-1 at half-time and remained tied at the end of the third quarter. However, Belgium pulled ahead by scoring two quick goals in the final 15 minutes, securing a well-deserved win.
India, led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, showed glimpses of skill and determination, but the team struggled to finish key scoring opportunities in the final quarter. The Belgian team, on the other hand, remained calm under pressure and capitalized on India’s mistakes to take control of the game.
The Indian team will now look to bounce back as they take on Argentina today at 7:30 PM. This match will be crucial to regain confidence after the opening defeat. Following that, India will face Belgium again on February 14, giving them another chance to challenge the European side. The leg will conclude with India playing Argentina on February 15, which will be an important match to gather points in the league standings.
Fans are hoping for improved teamwork and sharper attacking play in the coming matches as India aims to make a strong start to their FIH Pro League campaign.
