India to Lease Russian Nuclear Sub for $2 Billion
India will spend about $2 billion to lease a nuclear-powered submarine from Russia.
This agreement comes after nearly ten years of talks.
The deal is being completed at the same time that Russian President Vladimir Putin
visits New Delhi this week.
Talks were delayed earlier because of disagreement over the price. But now, both
countries have reached an agreement. Indian officials visited a Russian shipyard
in November. India expects to receive the submarine in the next two years, though
it may take longer because the project is complicated.
Putin will arrive in India on Thursday for his first visit since Russia started
the Ukraine conflict. He will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen
defence and energy ties between both nations.
