India’s Global Standing Weakens Amid West Asia Conflict

As the second half of the Budget session approaches, the Congress party is demanding a full-fledged short duration discussion on the West Asian situation in Parliament. The Modi government’s recent statements on the issue have not satisfied the opposition, and they are calling for a more comprehensive discussion. According to Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in-charge communications, the current situation is a “sticky wicket” for the government, with India playing second fiddle to both the US and Israel. He used a cricketing analogy to describe the situation, saying that the Modi government has been on a sticky wicket for a long time, with googlies being bowled from Washington. The West Asian conflict is not just a regional issue; it affects millions of Indians who work in the region, including those living in countries such as Iran and Israel. The conflict has also impacted India’s economy, with remittances from the region amounting to billions of dollars every year. Ramesh believes that the government’s recent statements on the issue are inadequate and that a full-fledged discussion is necessary. He pointed out that the US Treasury Secretary’s statement on Russian oil purchases was an example of how India is seen as a supplicant, being given favors by the US rather than being treated as an equal partner. The Congress leader also criticized the Modi government for its silence on issues such as Israel’s targeted assassinations of Iranian leaders and the US’s attempts to pressure India to reduce its oil imports from Russia. He compared the current situation unfavorably with that of the past, when Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi stood up for India’s interests despite facing strong opposition from the US. The West Asian conflict has escalated significantly in recent days, with attacks and counter-attacks between Iran and its regional rivals. India has called for resolving the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, but so far, the efforts have been unsuccessful.
