IPL 2026: KKR Hopes Rise for Pathirana as Hasaranga’s Future Looms Uncertain
Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has yet to join the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) squad for IPL 2026. Reports suggest he hasn’t passed a mandatory fitness test, delaying his No Objection Certificate (NOC). Despite having a batting session in Colombo, he hasn’t bowled, leaving his participation unclear.
Hasaranga has been out of competitive cricket since February due to a hamstring injury sustained during Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup match against Ireland. His absence is concerning for IPL teams, as they face issues with players not joining after being acquired at the base price. The IPL now penalizes overseas players who withdraw from the season post-auction.
If Hasaranga can’t participate, possible replacements include England’s Liam Dawson and Rehan Ahmed, and Afghanistan’s Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi, all part of the Registered Available Players Pool (RAPP).
Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) remain optimistic about Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana. He injured his leg during the T20 World Cup but has resumed bowling in nets, though not at full capacity. KKR acquired him for ₹18 crore at the IPL 2026 mini-auction.
Currently winless after two matches, KKR will face Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Monday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
