Iran, U.S. Agree on Guiding Principles in Talks
Iran said on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, that it had reached an understanding with the United States on certain “guiding principles” during talks held in Geneva. These principles are meant to help both sides move towards an agreement and avoid further conflict.
However, U.S. Vice-President J.D. Vance said that Iran has not yet accepted all of Washington’s key conditions, also known as “red lines.” This shows that important differences still remain between the two countries.
The talks were mediated by Oman and aimed at reducing tensions between Iran and the United States. One major concern is Iran’s nuclear programme, which the U.S. believes could lead to the development of nuclear weapons. The discussions were held to prevent the possibility of U.S. military action.
The negotiations come at a sensitive time, only weeks after Iran’s clerical government faced large-scale protests and responded with a heavy crackdown that reportedly led to thousands of deaths.
Both sides have indicated a willingness to continue discussions, but a final agreement has not yet been reached.
