Jamaat Leader Targets Pro-Hegemony Forces Before Polls

In what is seen as an indirect message to India, the leader of Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party has said that the upcoming parliamentary elections will reject what he called “pro-hegemony” forces in the country.

Speaking at an election rally in Dhaka on Sunday (February 8, 2026), Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman addressed a large gathering of party supporters. He said the people of Bangladesh would show a “red card” to those who, according to him, support outside influence or dominance in the country’s politics.

Although he did not directly name any country, political observers believe the remarks were aimed at India, which has close ties with Bangladesh’s current government.

Dr. Rahman said that if Jamaat-e-Islami and its alliance come to power, they will work for the welfare of all sections of society, without discrimination. He promised that the party would focus on development, justice, and equal opportunities for citizens.

He also announced that student leader Nahid Islam would be given an important ministerial role if the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami wins the elections. He described Nahid Islam as a capable young leader who could represent the voice of the youth.

The rally is part of Jamaat’s campaign ahead of the parliamentary elections. The party is trying to build support through alliances and public meetings across the country.

With the election approaching, political rhetoric has intensified, and parties are making strong statements to attract voters and criticise their opponents.
