KCR’s Party Opposes Congress Move to Rename Secunderabad
Former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s party, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has strongly criticised the Congress for attempting to remove the name and identity of Secunderabad as part of a proposed civic restructuring plan. The party said the move amounts to an attack on the city’s culture, history, and long-standing traditions.
The BRS opposed the proposed reorganisation of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), arguing that it could lead to Secunderabad losing its distinct identity. Party leaders said Secunderabad has a rich heritage and a unique character that should be protected, not erased in the name of administrative changes.
BRS MLC Sravan Dasoju said the proposal was an insult to the history of Secunderabad and the self-respect of its residents. He accused the Congress of trying to carry out what he called a “cultural assassination” under the cover of governance reforms.
He further said that civic restructuring should aim to improve public services and administration, not dilute the historical and cultural identity of cities. The BRS demanded that the Congress-led government clearly explain its plans and ensure that Secunderabad’s name and heritage are preserved.
The issue has sparked political debate, with the BRS urging citizens and civil society groups to oppose any move that could weaken Secunderabad’s identity.
