Korattur Lake Turns Pink Amid Chemical Pollution

A thick layer of oily, chemical-filled sludge has spread across large parts of
Korattur Lake, turning the water light pink in some areas. This has caused fresh
concern about how fast one of Chennai’s major lakes is being polluted.

Residents and activists say the pollution started when untreated
wastewater—possibly containing industrial chemicals—entered the lake through a
surplus channel that brings extra water from Ambattur Lake. Normally,
sewage-contaminated water flows into Korattur Lake during the rains, but locals
say this time it is much worse.

They claim the waste is much more toxic, leaving a greasy layer on the water and
giving off a strong chemical smell.
“This time the water has turned pink and feels sticky. It is definitely
chemical,” said S. Sujatha, a resident.
