LPG Shortage Hits Hostels, Canteens in Chennai

The shortage of commercial LPG (cooking gas) is starting to affect many places that serve food in the city. Corporate canteens, hostels, paying guest (PG) accommodations, wedding halls, and hospital cafeterias are all beginning to feel the impact. School and college canteens may also soon face difficulties if the shortage continues.

On Tuesday, hostels and PGs were among the first to reduce their services. The Tamil Nadu IT Hostel and PG Owners Welfare Association, which represents more than 15,000 hostels and PG facilities in and around Chennai, said that due to the gas shortage, they would stop preparing items like coffee, tea, chapatis, and dosas for the time being.

Managers of wedding halls and hospital kitchens also warned that they might soon have to cut down on cooking large meals or limit their menu. The shortage is expected to cause inconvenience for students, employees, and guests who rely on these facilities for their daily meals.

Officials said that the LPG supply has been affected because of increased demand and disruptions in delivery. They urged people to use gas carefully and avoid wastage while authorities work on improving the supply.
