Marina Beach Toilets Shut Due to Power Issues

Modern public toilets built by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) at places like Marina Beach are often kept closed, especially at night, because of basic infrastructure problems. This has caused inconvenience to thousands of visitors who come to the beach every day.

The GCC had constructed these toilets to improve hygiene and provide better facilities for the public. However, many of these toilets are not functioning regularly due to issues such as lack of water supply and electricity.

After the announcement of the Blue Flag certification project, which aims to improve the cleanliness and global standards of Marina Beach, the number of visitors has increased significantly. Families, walkers, tourists, and vendors visit the beach throughout the day and even late into the evening. As a result, the use of public toilets has also gone up.

Workers managing the toilets said they are forced to shut them down at night because they cannot pump water into the tanks. The water pumps depend on electricity, and frequent power cuts or disruption in supply make it difficult to maintain water flow. Without water, the toilets cannot be cleaned or used safely.

Staff members added that keeping the toilets open without proper water and lighting would lead to unhygienic conditions. So, they close the facilities to avoid health risks and complaints.

Visitors have expressed frustration over the closures, saying it becomes very difficult to find basic sanitation facilities, especially for women, children, and elderly people. Many feel that such problems should be fixed quickly, particularly when the beach is being promoted as an international-standard tourist spot.

Residents and regular visitors have urged the authorities to ensure uninterrupted power and water supply so that the toilets remain open at all times. They believe proper maintenance is necessary to match the goals of the Blue Flag project and to keep the beach clean and comfortable for everyone.
