Meghalaya Mine Blast Death Toll Rises to 30
The number of people who have died in the coal mine blast in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district has increased to 30. Two more injured workers died while receiving treatment at a hospital, an official said on Tuesday (February 10, 2026).
The two victims were residents of Katigorah in Assam’s Cachar district. They had suffered serious injuries in the explosion and were admitted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for treatment. Despite doctors’ efforts, both of them later passed away.
The blast occurred inside a coal mine in East Jaintia Hills, an area known for coal mining activities. The explosion caused heavy damage inside the mine and trapped several workers. Rescue teams were rushed to the site soon after the incident to search for survivors and recover bodies.
Officials said many workers were injured in the blast, and several were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Rescue and relief operations have been continuing, with authorities trying to ensure that all affected families receive help.
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns about safety conditions in coal mines in the region. Questions are being asked about whether proper safety measures were followed to protect the workers.
The government has also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and promised support to those affected by the tragedy.
