Metro Tunnel Links Mylapore to Marina
Chennai Metro Rail is getting ready to connect Mylapore and Marina Beach through an underground tunnel as part of Phase II of the project. This new link will make travel easier and faster for people in these busy areas. In about two years, metro trains are expected to run through this route, helping commuters save time and avoid road traffic.
A major step in this work will happen next week. The tunnel boring machine (TBM), which started digging from the Light House area, will reach Thirumayilai and break through on February 9. This event marks the completion of the long tunnel section between the two points.
Before continuing the work, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) recently gave approval for the TBM operations. This permission was important because the machine had to drill very close to the Thirumayilai MRTS station — just about 10 metres away from its foundation piles. Officials needed to make sure the digging would not damage the existing railway structure or affect passenger safety.
The TBM’s journey faced several challenges and was delayed by nearly one and a half years. Engineers had to work carefully in the crowded city area and deal with technical difficulties underground. Despite the delay, the breakthrough is seen as a big achievement for the metro project.
Once completed, the new tunnel will improve connectivity between Mylapore and Marina Beach, reduce travel time, and provide a safe and comfortable transport option for thousands of daily passengers.
