MGR Flown to U.S. Amid Health Crisis

October 1984 was a very difficult and tense time for both India and Tamil Nadu. Two major events shocked the country. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) became seriously ill, and around the same time, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated.

MGR, who was not only a political leader but also a famous film star, was first admitted to a private hospital in Madras after his health suddenly got worse. His illness worried people across the state, as he was loved by millions. Many closely followed news about his condition.

When his health did not improve, doctors said he needed better and advanced treatment. So, on November 6, 1984, he was taken to the United States on a special Air India chartered flight. The plane was fitted with medical equipment and doctors, almost like a small hospital, to keep him safe during the journey.

He was admitted to the Downstate Medical Centre in Brooklyn, New York. Reports said his condition was very serious. He had a high fever, was breathing with the help of a tube, and one of his kidneys was not working properly. He had also suffered a stroke and was not fully conscious.

Back in Tamil Nadu, people were deeply worried. Many gathered outside hospitals and temples to pray for his recovery. His illness also created political uncertainty, as he was the Chief Minister and an important leader for the state.

At the same time, the country was already grieving over the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. These events together made it one of the most troubled periods in India’s history.

Even during this tough time, MGR continued his treatment in the U.S., and the people of Tamil Nadu waited hopefully for his recovery.
