Migrant Boat Capsizes in Gambia, Seven Dead

In Gambia, seven people died after a migrant boat overturned during the night in the northwest of the country. At least 96 people were saved, and search and rescue work is still going on, the defence ministry said.

Officials believe the boat was carrying more than 200 people when the accident happened. Rescue teams are continuing their efforts to find anyone who may still be missing.

The accident took place on the Atlantic sea route, which is often used by migrants from West Africa who try to reach Spain’s Canary Islands. This journey is very dangerous because the boats are usually overcrowded, the sea can be rough, and the travel distance is long.

For many years, poverty, unemployment, and political problems in parts of West Africa have pushed many people to take this risky journey in search of a better future. The Atlantic route has taken many lives and is known as one of the most dangerous migrant routes in the world.
