Missing Sikh Woman Converts and Marries in Pakistan
An Indian Sikh woman who went missing in Pakistan has reportedly converted to
Islam and married a local man, according to a document that has appeared online.
The woman, Sarabjit Kaur, 52, is from Kapurthala in Punjab. She had travelled to
Pakistan on 4 November with a group of Sikh pilgrims to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev’s
Prakash Parv, which marks his 555th birth anniversary. The group of 1,992 pilgrims
returned to India on 13 November after spending about 10 days there — but Kaur did
not return with them.
A nikahnama (Islamic marriage certificate) written in Urdu has now surfaced.
It claims that Kaur married Nasir Hussain, a man from Sheikhupura, a town
around 56 km from Lahore. The document says she converted to Islam and changed her name to “Noor” before the marriage. This document has not been independently verified.
Kaur was previously divorced and has two sons with her ex-husband, Karnail
Singh, who has been living in England for almost 30 years.
