Nepali Congress Becomes Largest Party in Upper House

The Nepali Congress (NC) has become the largest party in the Upper House of Nepal after the recent National Assembly elections. The elections were held on January 25, and the final results were declared by the Election Commission of Nepal.

In the elections, the Nepali Congress won nine seats, while the Communist Party of Nepal–Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) won eight seats. The Loktantrik Samajwadi Party–Nepal (LSP-N) won one seat. Together, the NC and UML alliance won 17 of the 18 seats, showing strong support for the two-party coalition.

The Nepali Communist Party, which had eight members retiring from the Upper House, lost all its seats. This was mainly because of the alliance between the NC and UML.

In the 59-member National Assembly, the current seat distribution is as follows:

Nepali Congress: 24 seats

Nepali Communist Party (NCP): 17 seats

CPN-UML: 10 seats

Janata Samajbadi Party–Nepal (JSP-Nepal): 2 seats

LSP-N: 1 seat

Rastriya Janamorcha: 1 seat

Nominated members: 2 seats

Vacant: 1 seat

The results mark a significant shift in Nepal’s Upper House, with the Nepali Congress now holding the largest number of seats and increasing its influence in national politics.
