Nine Mayiladuthurai Fishermen Arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Nine fishermen from Mayiladuthurai were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy near Kodiakkarai on Saturday.

The fishermen had gone out to sea on Friday in two fibre boats. While they were fishing near Kodiakkarai, the Sri Lankan Navy intercepted them, saying they had crossed into international waters.

The Sri Lankan Navy took the nine fishermen into custody and also seized the two fibre boats used by them.

Further details about their release are awaited. Local fishermen associations have urged the authorities to take steps to bring the fishermen back safely.
