Nine Nigerian Soldiers Killed in Borno Attack

At least nine Nigerian soldiers were killed and several others injured when their convoy hit a landmine and came under gunfire in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, security sources said on Monday, January 5, 2026.

The attack occurred on Sunday, January 4, near Bindundul village, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Kareto. This area is known to be controlled by fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), who often set up checkpoints and carry out attacks, according to a military source from the Damasak brigade.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, where militants frequently target military convoys and local communities. Authorities are investigating the attack and have increased security measures in the region to prevent further incidents.

Local residents expressed fear following the attack, noting that ISWAP fighters continue to operate freely in some areas, making travel and daily life dangerous for both civilians and soldiers.
