P. Shanmugam on Election Strategies in Tamil Nadu

P. Shanmugam, a leader from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has shared his thoughts on election strategies in Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that it is incorrect to ask political parties to contest under the symbol of the leading party in an alliance. Symbols represent identity, and forcing smaller parties to use another party’s symbol undermines their distinctiveness.

Shanmugam expressed dissatisfaction over being allocated only five seats in the current election. However, he clarified that this would not affect grassroots coordination within the DMK-led alliance. His party’s workers are focused on ensuring the alliance’s victory.

Regarding actor Kamal Haasan’s decision to withdraw his party from the alliance, Shanmugum agreed with Haasan’s stance. He stated that destroying a party’s identity is unacceptable and criticized the DMK for not addressing reasonable demands.

Shanmugam also discussed the impact of freebies announced by political parties. While he welcomed schemes like the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai, which recognizes women’s household labor, he questioned the practicality of other promises, such as giving gold sovereigns to every child born in the state.

He highlighted the importance of opposing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the national level and praised the DMK for its role in this struggle. Shanmugam also stressed the need for balanced development across Tamil Nadu, particularly addressing issues like infrastructure distribution and alcoholism.
