Questions Rise Over Imran Khan’s Jail Condition
Speculation about the health of Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister
Imran Khan is growing after some unverified Afghan media reports claimed he had
died in Adiala Jail. In response, his son Kasim Khan has publicly asked for proof
that his father is alive, permission to meet him, and his release. In a post on
X, Kasim said Imran Khan has been in jail for 845 days and has reportedly spent
the last six weeks in a death cell without any family contact.
His sisters have also not been allowed to meet him, even though the court had
permitted it. Kasim said this secrecy is not normal security but a deliberate
attempt to hide Khan’s condition and stop communication with his family. Calling
the situation cruel, he urged world leaders, international courts, and human
rights groups to step in. Khan’s sister said that authorities could simply
follow the court’s orders to resolve the issue.
Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023 and faces several legal cases that
he says are politically motivated. In January, he and his wife were convicted in
a corruption case and sentenced to 14 years and seven years in jail. Earlier in
March, leaders from his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), also said he was
being kept in a death cell in solitary confinement.
