The Telangana Legislative Assembly has decided to send the Telangana Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill, 2026, to a Select Committee for further review. This decision was taken after several members asked for more time to study the bill in detail.

The bill aims to prevent hate speech and hate crimes in Telangana. However, many members raised concerns about how the law would be applied. They said the bill’s scope is wide and needs clearer definitions to avoid confusion.

Some members also worried that the law could be misused if proper safeguards are not included. They stressed the need to protect freedom of speech while also addressing hate-related offences.

Interestingly, even members from the ruling Indian National Congress raised similar concerns. Because of this, the Assembly agreed that the bill should be examined more carefully before moving forward.

The Select Committee will now study the bill, suggest changes if needed, and make sure it is balanced and fair. The goal is to create a law that can effectively prevent hate crimes while also protecting the rights of citizens.
