Saudi-Led Air Strikes Hit Yemen Separatist Stronghold
A Saudi-led coalition carried out deadly air strikes on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, in the home province of a UAE-backed separatist leader in Yemen. The strikes came after Yemen’s divided government removed the leader from power and accused him of treason.
The attacks targeted areas linked to Aidaros Alzubidi, head of the Southern Transitional Council (STC). The STC is a separatist group that wants independence for southern Yemen and has strong backing from the United Arab Emirates.
Last month, Alzubidi’s forces took control of large areas in southern Yemen, challenging the authority of the internationally recognised Yemeni government. However, the advance was later pushed back after the Saudi-led coalition and allied Yemeni forces launched military operations to regain control.
The latest air strikes highlight growing tensions within Yemen’s already complex conflict, where different local groups and foreign powers are fighting for influence. The situation has raised fears of further violence and instability in the war-torn country.
