Senior Russian General Killed in Moscow Blast
A senior Russian army officer was killed on Monday in southern Moscow when an
explosive device planted under his car exploded, investigators said.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said it has opened a murder investigation into
the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, who was the head of the training
department of the General Staff.
Investigators said they are looking into several possibilities, including whether
the attack was linked to Ukrainian special forces.
Since Russia sent its troops into Ukraine in February 2022, Ukraine has been
blamed for a number of attacks on Russian military officers and pro-Kremlin
figures, both inside Russia and in Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine.
Earlier, in April, General Yaroslav Moskalik, a senior officer in the General
Staff, was killed in a car bomb blast near Moscow.
In December 2024, Igor Kirillov, who headed Russia’s radiological, chemical,
and biological defence forces, was killed when a bomb hidden in an electric
scooter exploded in Moscow. That attack was later claimed by Ukraine’s SBU security agency.
