Southern Railway Speeds Up Station Redevelopment
After recently completing the redevelopment of two railway stations in
Chennai, the Southern Railway has increased the pace of renovation work at
several other stations. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), it
plans to complete the redevelopment of four more railway stations by March next year.
The ABSS project was launched to improve passenger facilities and modernise
railway stations across the country. In Chennai and nearby areas, the scheme
covers 17 railway stations. So far, two stations — St. Thomas Mount and
Sullurpetta — have been fully redeveloped and inaugurated.
At these upgraded stations, passengers now benefit from better platforms,
improved waiting areas, cleaner surroundings, and modern amenities such as
improved lighting, signage, and accessibility features. Officials say similar
improvements are being carried out at the remaining stations under the scheme.
The ongoing redevelopment work focuses on making stations more passenger-friendly,
safer, and easier to navigate, especially for senior citizens and persons with
disabilities. Southern Railway officials are confident that the next four
stations will be ready on schedule, providing a better travel experience for
commuters and long-distance passengers alike.
