Stalin Launches Sea Turtle Conservation Centre in Guindy
Chennai: Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday laid the foundation stone for a new sea turtle conservation centre at the Children’s Park in Guindy.
The centre will focus on the protection and study of sea turtles, which are an important part of the coastal ecosystem. It will be equipped with special facilities for scientific research, including tracking turtles through telemetry, monitoring their movements, and managing data in a central system.
Officials said the centre will also serve several other purposes. It will work as a training and capacity-building hub for forest staff, researchers, and conservation workers. It will help improve their skills in turtle rescue, rehabilitation, and protection.
In addition, the centre will act as a public education and awareness platform, helping people understand the importance of conserving sea turtles and marine life. Visitors, students, and volunteers will be able to learn about turtle habitats, nesting sites, and conservation efforts.
The facility will also function as a nodal centre to improve coordination between different government departments and provide technical expertise for wildlife conservation projects.
By setting up this centre, the government aims to strengthen scientific research and institutional support for protecting sea turtles, while addressing growing environmental and conservation challenges along Tamil Nadu’s coast.
