Stormy Budget Session Adjourns, Lok Sabha March 9

The first phase of the Budget session of Parliament ended on Friday (February 13, 2026) after several days of heated debates and arguments. The Lok Sabha will meet again on March 9 after a three-week break.

During this session, there were strong exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition over the India–U.S. interim trade deal. Opposition members raised questions about the details of the agreement and its impact on Indian businesses and farmers. The government defended the deal, saying it would strengthen economic ties and benefit the country.

Another issue that caused debate was the unpublished memoir of former Army Chief M.M. Naravane. Opposition leaders demanded clarification on certain claims mentioned in reports about the book. The government responded by saying that such matters should not be politicised and that national security must be handled carefully.

Due to these issues, several sittings of the House saw disruptions, protests, and adjournments. Members from both sides accused each other of not allowing smooth functioning of Parliament.

With the first leg now over, Members of Parliament will use the three-week recess to examine the Union Budget in detail. During this period, parliamentary standing committees will study the budget allocations made to different central ministries. These committees will review spending plans, question officials, and prepare reports with recommendations.

When Parliament reconvenes on March 9, discussions on the budget demands and other pending bills are expected to continue. The second phase of the session is likely to focus more on detailed financial debates and the passage of key legislation.
