Supreme Court Reviews Major Voter List Update
The Supreme Court continued hearing petitions on Wednesday (November 26, 2025) that challenge the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls happening in several States across India.
Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are two of the 12 States and Union Territories taking part in the second phase of this SIR exercise, which was announced on October 28. During this revision, officials check and update the voter lists to remove errors and add missing names.
Because these 12 regions have a very large population, the final decision of the Supreme Court will affect about 51 crore voters. This makes the case extremely important, as it will determine whether the ongoing revision of voter lists should continue or be changed.
