Supreme Court to Hear Plea Against Sarma
The Supreme Court on Tuesday (February 10, 2026) agreed to urgently hear a petition filed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), seeking legal action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The petition asks the court to direct the police to register a First Information Report (FIR) over alleged communal speeches made by the Chief Minister. It also refers to a recent social media post, which has since been deleted, that allegedly showed him firing a gun toward an animated image of two visibly Muslim men. The image reportedly included phrases such as “point-blank shot” and “no mercy”.
The CPI(M) argued that such speeches and posts could create communal tension and disturb peace and harmony in society. The party has requested a proper investigation into the matter.
During the hearing, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made a brief remark, saying, “As elections take place, part of the elections take place in the Supreme Court.” His comment suggested that many political disputes are increasingly being brought before the court during election time.
The Supreme Court agreed to list the matter for an urgent hearing, considering the seriousness of the allegations. The court is expected to examine whether an FIR should be filed and whether further legal action is needed.
The case has drawn attention because it involves a sitting Chief Minister and concerns issues related to communal harmony and responsible political speech. More details are likely to emerge after the court hears the matter.
