Tambaram’s Growth Hindered by Infrastructure Problems

Tambaram, often called Chennai’s gateway, has become one of the fastest-growing areas in the city’s south. This growth is fueled by urbanization, new housing, and increasing business activity. However, residents say basic infrastructure struggles to keep up.

Despite good road and rail links, issues like poor drainage systems, waste management problems, traffic jams on roads like GST Road, and pollution of water bodies remain major concerns. The area includes both urban and rural neighborhoods, such as Tambaram East, West, Selaiyur, Chitlapakkam, and others.

Represented by S.R. Raja of the DMK party, the constituency has seen some growth but lacks enough infrastructure to handle its fast-growing population. Problems like traffic congestion, poor road conditions, and limited drainage have worsened during the monsoon season due to flooding and stagnant water.

Residents say promised projects, such as an underground drainage system for Perungalathur, are delayed. Roads are being repaired only for appearances, not properly fixed. There’s also a lack of police personnel and basic amenities like schools and parks.

Waste management is another issue, with garbage often dumped in open areas or near water bodies, leading to health risks. Untreated sewage flows into lakes, causing pollution and forcing repeated clean-up costs.

While officials claim progress has been made, including stormwater drains and better road connections, residents argue more needs to be done to address these long-standing problems. The constituency remains a key area of focus in the electoral landscape due to its mix of opportunities and challenges.
