Tamil Nadu 2026 Elections: Key Contests in Chennai
Chennai’s electoral landscape is heating up as major political figures prepare for battle. The DMK party is leading the charge, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin contesting from Kolathur and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin running in Chepauk-Triplicane. The party hopes to leverage its governance record and a mix of experienced and younger candidates who connect well with both local communities and the youth.
A key challenge for DMK is maintaining their lead in closely contested seats, as rival parties like TVK aim to gain votes from minority groups. Historically, seven constituencies in Chennai saw narrow margins in 2016, and T Nagar and Velachery remained tight in 2021. TVK’s candidate Vijay is running in Perambur, a traditionally Dravidian stronghold, against DMK’s district secretary R.D. Sekar.
AIADMK is focusing on reconnecting with younger voters while defending their strongholds like Royapuram and RK Nagar. However, their candidates face tough competition from newer political entrants. The BJP has re-entered Mylapore with Tamilisai Soundararajan, challenging DMK’s sitting MLA D Velu, who may face backlash over issues affecting fishermen.
T Nagar is a multi-cornered contest, with candidates from DMK, AIADMK, and NTK vying for votes. DMK is also making strategic changes by replacing long-standing candidates in constituencies like Anna Nagar and Tiruvottiyur, aiming to dismantle family-dominated influence.
The election is shaping up as a dynamic contest, with multiple parties vying for influence, particularly NTK, which may play a decisive role in several seats. The outcome could hinge on these emerging dynamics and voter sentiment.
