Tamil Nadu Polls: AIADMK Challenges DMK Directly in Chennai
AIADMK has decided to contest 13 out of 16 assembly seats in Chennai on its own, signaling its intention to challenge the ruling DMK head-on. By doing so, the party aims to make a comeback in the region. It has also brought in three former ministers—D Jayakumar, Benjamin, and Gokula Indhira—to strengthen its campaign.
AIADMK will directly face CM M K Stalin and Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin in key constituencies like Kolathur and Chepauk. The party claims it has a strong booth presence, with 10 workers per polling booth across all areas. This is seen as an attempt to counter DMK’s influence in regions like Harbour and Thousand Lights.
AIADMK believes people are gradually shifting back to the party after feeling disillusioned by DMK’s opposition to BJP. The party is focusing on regaining its traditional strongholds, including Royapuram and Mylapore. Campaigning has already begun, with leaders visiting voters door-to-door.
However, some within AIADMK are concerned about relying on weaker allies like PMK in Perambur. Party officials assure that allies typically bring limited support and that AIADMK will ensure their victory regardless of performance. This strategy is part of a broader effort to limit BJP’s influence and rebuild minority support ahead of the polls.
