TN Assembly Polls May Set Voting Record
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has said that the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu are expected to set a record, even better than Bihar, in terms of voter participation. Speaking to the media in Chennai, he praised Tamil Nadu for consistently showing high voter turnout in past elections.
He said that the State has always set an example when it comes to the percentage of people casting their votes. The Election Commission is confident that the coming elections will see even higher participation.
Responding to a question about nominations, he explained that candidates can submit their nomination forms online through the Election Commission’s website. However, as per the law, the final filing of nominations must still be done in person.
The Chief Election Commissioner also said that special efforts will be made to encourage young voters between the ages of 18 and 30 to participate actively in the elections. He described voting as a “festival of democracy” and urged young people to take part in large numbers.
On the issue of money flow during elections and concerns raised by small traders, he said that any large amount of unaccounted cash would be frozen and seized. He advised small traders not to carry money beyond the permissible limit to avoid inconvenience during election checks.
He also mentioned that detailed discussions were held with representatives of all political parties. Many parties suggested that the elections be held in a single phase. He assured that their suggestions would be carefully considered before finalising the schedule.
Highlighting voter demographics, he said that the number of female voters in Tamil Nadu is higher than the number of male voters, which reflects strong participation of women in the democratic process.
