“TN Forms Panels to Address Poultry Farmers’ Issues”
Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry Minister Anitha R. Radhakrishnan on Friday informed the Assembly that the government has formed district-level committees to address the problems faced by poultry farmers.
She said the government will study the reports from these committees and then take suitable action. The statement came in response to a call attention motion moved by members of the AIADMK, Congress, and Left parties regarding the ongoing protests by poultry farmers.
Farmers have been demanding that corporate companies increase the contract rearing payment from ₹6.50 to ₹20 per chicken. They say the current rate is too low and does not cover their costs.
AIADMK member A.K. Selvaraj said that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, when he was the Leader of the Opposition, had promised to increase the payment for poultry farmers.
Other members in the Assembly also supported the farmers. They pointed out that the cost of raw materials, feed, and other expenses has increased, and the payment should be raised accordingly.
The government is expected to make a decision after reviewing the situation and the committees’ recommendations.
