Ukraine-Russia Talks Begin in Switzerland with Trump Mediation
Ukrainian and Russian officials are meeting in Switzerland today for a second round of talks, organised by U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting will last two days and is expected to be similar to earlier talks held this month in Abu Dhabi. Representatives from Washington, Kyiv, and Moscow are attending the talks.
The Abu Dhabi discussions mainly focused on a possible military ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the Geneva talks will cover more issues. These include disputes over territory and other demands put forward by Russia.
He will be joined by Igor Kostyukov, head of Russian military intelligence, and Mikhail Galuzin, the deputy foreign minister.
The main aim of the talks is to address the ongoing conflict and find ways to reduce tensions between Ukraine and Russia. Observers hope the discussions will lead to progress on both military and political matters.
However, the negotiations are expected to be challenging because of the deep disagreements between the two sides. Experts say it will take careful discussion and compromise to reach any meaningful agreement, as both countries have very different goals in the conflict.
The talks are seen as an important step in trying to bring stability to the region and prevent further escalation of the fighting. Both sides have expressed cautious optimism, but many expect the process to be slow and complex.
