UN Plans Annual Global Dialogue on AI

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not the direct role of the United Nations. However, he added that the UN plans to organise an annual global dialogue on AI, bringing together governments, private companies, and civil society groups.

In an interview before his visit to New Delhi for the India AI Impact Summit, Guterres spoke about three major initiatives under the Global Digital Compact to improve global cooperation on AI.

One key step is the creation of a high-level Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence. This panel will include 40 experts from around the world. Guterres said the panel will provide independent scientific reports on AI developments and possible risks. These reports will help governments make better and informed policy decisions.

The UN General Assembly has already appointed the members of the panel. Among them is IIT Madras professor Balaraman Ravindran.

Guterres also suggested setting up a voluntary global fund of up to three billion dollars. This fund would support developing countries in building their AI capacity and improving their access to advanced technology.

He said these steps aim to ensure that AI benefits everyone and that countries work together to manage its challenges responsibly.
