US, South Korea Begin Joint Air Exercise

The air forces of South Korea and the United States have started a joint aerial exercise this week at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek. The training programme, called the “Buddy Squadron” exercise, will continue until Friday.

The main aim of the exercise is to improve coordination and teamwork between the two allies. It focuses on strengthening their ability to operate together smoothly during real combat or emergency situations.

Officials said that this year’s exercise is larger than in previous years. The number of aircraft taking part in each session has more than doubled. The number of sorties, or flight missions, has also increased significantly, allowing pilots to get more training time in the air.

The Buddy Squadron exercise is a battalion-level drill that is held in rotation between South Korean and US forces. It allows both sides to share their skills, tactics, and operational methods.

The training includes air-to-air combat practice and integrated tactical missions using both fourth-generation and fifth-generation fighter jets. These advanced aircraft help improve modern combat readiness.

By conducting such joint exercises, both countries aim to strengthen their defence partnership and maintain strong security in the region. Officials said the drill will improve joint operational readiness and help the two forces respond quickly to any threats.

The exercise highlights the close military cooperation between South Korea and the United States.
