“Velachery Faces Floods, Traffic, and Slow Development”
Velachery became its own constituency in 2008 after a reorganization of assembly areas. Since then, it has held assembly elections in 2011, 2016, and 2021. Despite this, many residents feel that the area has not developed properly.
One of the main problems people face in Velachery is regular flooding. Residents say that the floods happen because Velachery Lake is not well maintained, and illegal constructions have blocked its natural flow. These encroachments also make the roads narrower and increase traffic congestion.
Road conditions in the area are another concern. Potholes and damaged streets make commuting difficult, especially during the rainy season. Traffic jams are common, mainly because of encroachments that reduce road space and slow down vehicles.
On a positive note, the recent expansion of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) in Velachery has been welcomed by the people. They hope that the improved connectivity will make travel easier and help the area grow.
Residents continue to urge the local authorities to take action on these problems, especially to prevent flooding, improve roads, and manage traffic better. Many feel that with proper planning and maintenance, Velachery can become a much better place to live.
