“Velachery-St. Thomas Mount MRTS Extension Finished”

The Southern Railway has finished the extension of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount. The next step is a trial run, which will be carried out by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Southern Circle. Once the trial is successful and safety clearance is given, the service will be opened to the public.

Earlier, the Southern Railway had planned to get the safety certificate before the Pongal festival and start the services during the celebrations. However, senior officials now say that the project is unlikely to be inaugurated in January.

The 4.5-kilometre MRTS extension from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount has been completed at a cost of ₹734 crore. This new extension will make it easier for passengers to travel and improve connectivity in the city.

Senior officials also mentioned that after the CRS approves the trial run, the Southern Railway will announce the official launch date for the public.
