Wind Farm Plan Raises Environmental Concerns in Dhanushkodi

A plan to set up a 50-MW wind farm in Dhanushkodi, Rameswaram taluk,
has worried local residents and environmentalists. They are concerned
that the project may damage the delicate coastal environment and the
nearby Greater Flamingo Sanctuary.
The project, proposed by the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) under
the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, includes installing four wind
turbines, along with support facilities and a jetty for transport and
research work.
The Dhanushkodi site is part of the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) categories
IB, II, and IVA. It has been chosen as a testing site for offshore wind energy
research under India’s 2015 Offshore Wind Energy Policy.
