“World’s Largest Nuclear Plant Set to Restart”
The world’s largest nuclear power plant, located in Kashiwazaki-Kariwa in Japan, is set to restart operations on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, for the first time since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, according to the plant’s operator.
The plant was shut down after the Fukushima accident raised serious concerns about nuclear safety across Japan. Since then, strict safety checks and upgrades have been carried out before allowing any restart.
Last month, the Governor of Niigata province, where the plant is located, gave approval for the resumption of operations. However, many local residents continue to express strong safety concerns, and public opinion in the region remains deeply divided.
While supporters say restarting the plant will help meet electricity demand and reduce energy shortages, critics worry about the risks of another nuclear accident, especially in an earthquake-prone country like Japan.
Authorities have said safety measures have been strengthened, but the restart has once again sparked debate over nuclear energy, public safety, and trust in authorities following the Fukushima disaster.
