India’s ONOS Scheme Breaks Download Records
In a remarkable achievement, India’s One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) scheme has surpassed 11 crore downloads in just one year since its launch. This initiative, approved by the Union Cabinet in November 2024 and rolled out on January 1, 2025, offers free access to international scholarly journals and research publications for students, faculty, and researchers across government institutions nationwide.
The scheme has been a massive success, with an average of nearly one crore downloads each month. Among the top-performing institutions, IIT Madras leads with over 40.3 lakh downloads, followed closely by IISc Bengaluru at 28.3 lakh downloads. Other prominent institutions like Banaras Hindu University (15.3 lakh), Delhi University (14.2 lakh), and Jawaharlal Nehru University (7.3 lakh) also showed significant usage.
The ONOS scheme provides access to over 30 major international publishers, covering a wide range of academic disciplines. This initiative has made global research literature freely available to institutions across India. Over Rs 6,000 crore has been allocated for the scheme, which is set to run through 2027.
The program’s success highlights its importance in bridging the gap between Indian researchers and global knowledge resources. By providing free access to international journals, ONOS has empowered students and scholars across India to stay updated with the latest advancements in their fields. This initiative not only promotes research excellence but also fosters collaboration between Indian institutions and the global academic community.
