Panjab University Closes After Students’ Protest Demands

Panjab University (PU) has closed all teaching, office, and other activities on Wednesday following a full shutdown called by protesting students. Exams scheduled for today have also been postponed. A PU statement said exams on November 26, 2025, at centres CHD40, CHD41, CHD43, and CHD44 (on the PU campus in Sector 14, Chandigarh, and shifted to DAV College, Sector 10) are now postponed. New dates will be announced later.

On Monday, PU Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig asked faculty members to guide students who might disrupt exams. She said that while students have the right to protest, those wishing to take exams also have the right to do so without interruption.

PU students, under the banner Panjab University Bachao Morcha, called for a complete shutdown on Wednesday to demand a schedule for Senate elections. They warned they would block Gate No. 1 and 2.

On November 10, students held a large protest, storming the campus gates and clashing with security. The protest started against the Centre’s plan to restructure the university’s governing bodies — the Senate and Syndicate.

However, the students continued their protest, demanding an announcement for the Senate election schedule, which has not been held for over a year.

Earlier, student representatives met the Vice-Chancellor, who said the Senate poll schedule had been sent to the Chancellor (India’s Vice-President) for approval.

The students said their protest will continue until their main demand — the Senate poll schedule — is announced.

Several political parties and farmers’ groups in Punjab, including Aam Aadmi Party, Shiromani Akali Dal, Congress, Samyukta Kisan Morcha, SKM (Non-Political), and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Morcha, have expressed support for the students.
