US Supreme Court Blocks National Guard Deployment in Chicago
The United States Supreme Court has stopped the deployment of the National Guard in Chicago after Illinois officials objected to the move. The decision raises questions about whether similar deployments can happen in other cities.
In its preliminary order, the court blocked the Trump administration from sending a state-controlled military force to the Chicago area. This came after immigration enforcement actions led to arrests and clashes between local residents and federal authorities.
The court refused to give the president broad powers to deploy the military in US cities. It said the Trump administration failed to prove that the law allows the president to take control of the National Guard to protect federal staff and property in Illinois.
Earlier, Donald Trump had ordered the National Guard to be deployed in cities such as Portland, Los Angeles and Washington, DC.
