GCC Approves New Kennels for Stray Dogs
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council, during its meeting on Friday, approved the purchase of new stainless steel foldable cages and dog kennels for stray animal care centres in north and south Chennai.
These new facilities will be set up at the Corporation’s dog pounds in Ariyalur (Zone 2) and Madippakkam in Perungudi (Zone 14). The aim is to provide better shelter and safer living conditions for street dogs.
The cages and kennels will mainly be used to house dogs that have undergone sterilisation surgeries at Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres. After the surgery, the dogs need proper care and rest before they are released back into their areas. The new equipment will help improve hygiene, comfort, and safety during this recovery period.
Officials said the stainless steel structures are strong, easy to clean, and long-lasting. This will help maintain better sanitation and prevent the spread of diseases among the animals.
The move is part of the Corporation’s ongoing efforts to improve animal welfare and manage the city’s stray dog population in a humane manner.
