Garbage Trucks Stranded After Landfill Protest
At the waste collection centre in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar area, trucks filled with garbage are standing very close to each other. The air is filled with a bad smell, making it hard for workers to do their job of separating waste.
The problem began after residents living near the Bellahalli landfill blocked the road leading to the dumping yard. Because of this protest, trucks carrying segregated waste have not been able to enter the landfill. Over the past few days, many trucks that had gone there were forced to return to the Jayanagar centre. Now, they are stuck there with no place to unload the garbage.
Nazima, a worker at the centre, said the situation has become very difficult. “Most of the trucks that went from here to the landfill have come back over the last few days. We have to sit and eat next to these huge piles of garbage,” she said. Workers are worried about the smell and possible health problems caused by staying close to waste for long hours.
The crisis started on February 16, when villagers near the Bellahalli landfill stopped more than 150 garbage trucks from entering the facility. They are protesting against the poor condition of roads in their villages. According to them, the heavy movement of garbage trucks over the years has badly damaged the roads.
The villagers also claimed that the government has not released enough funds to repair and improve the roads. They say they have raised the issue many times but have not seen proper action. Because of this, they decided to block the trucks to draw attention to their problems.
Meanwhile, the waste piling up at the Jayanagar centre has created serious challenges for sanitation workers and city authorities. Officials are now under pressure to resolve the issue quickly, as the growing garbage heaps could lead to health and environmental concerns in the area.
