AP’s Land Act Amendment: A Win-Win for Farmers and Green Growth?
The government of Andhra Pradesh has made a significant move to promote renewable energy in the state. The state Legislative Council passed an amendment to the Assigned Lands (Prohibition of Transfers) Act, 1977 on March 4. This bill had already been approved by the Assembly on February 25. According to Minister Anagani Satya Prasad, who introduced the bill, this reform is a win-win situation for both farmers and the state’s economy. He explained that poor farmers will receive steady income from leasing their land for renewable energy projects, while the state will benefit from significant investments and job creation. The minister estimated that these projects could attract massive investments of ₹10 lakh crore (approximately $13 billion) and generate 7.5 lakh jobs (around 750,000). This is a crucial step towards achieving Andhra Pradesh’s ambitious Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024. This amendment aims to secure land for renewable energy projects such as solar farms and wind turbines. By leasing their land, farmers will receive a steady income stream, helping them improve their livelihoods. The state government hopes that this move will not only boost the economy but also contribute to the fight against climate change by increasing the use of clean energy. As the minister described it, this amendment is a double bonanza for Andhra Pradesh – benefiting both farmers and the environment. With its passage, the state takes a significant step towards becoming a hub for renewable energy in India.
