CEC Gyanesh Kumar Faces Protests in Kolkata
Gyanesh Kumar faced protests in Kolkata on Monday morning (March 9, 2026) when some people showed black flags and raised “go back” slogans near the Kalighat Kali Temple.
The protest happened while officials from the Election Commission of India were visiting the area. The Election Commission team is currently on a two-day tour of Kolkata to review the preparations for upcoming elections in the state.
According to reports, the full bench of the Election Commission had gone to the famous Kalighat Kali Temple to offer prayers. The temple is located close to the residence of Mamata Banerjee.
While the officials were in the area, a group of protesters gathered nearby and raised slogans against the Chief Election Commissioner. Some of them also waved black flags as a sign of protest. The situation created tension in the area for a short time.
Police and security personnel present at the spot quickly stepped in to manage the situation and ensure the safety of the Election Commission officials. Authorities monitored the protest closely and prevented it from turning into a larger disturbance.
Despite the protest, the Election Commission officials continued with their scheduled visit. During the two-day tour, they are expected to meet state officials, review election arrangements, and assess the readiness of the administration for conducting free and fair elections.
Officials said that such visits are part of the Election Commission’s regular process to monitor election preparations in different states. The team will also review issues related to polling stations, security arrangements, and other logistical aspects needed to conduct the elections smoothly.
The incident has attracted political attention in West Bengal, where election-related issues often lead to strong reactions from different groups. However, authorities have said that the overall situation remained under control and the visit of the Election Commission officials continued as planned.
