West Bengal BJP leader Dinesh Trivedi expected to be new Indian envoy to Bangladesh

West Bengal BJP Leader Dinesh Trivedi Likely to Become India’s Envoy to Bangladesh

Dinesh Trivedi, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal and former Union Minister, is expected to become India’s next envoy to Bangladesh. Reliable sources have confirmed this development as India seeks to strengthen ties with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s government following recent political changes.

Relations between India and Bangladesh have faced challenges since August 2024 due to the change in leadership. However, efforts are ongoing to engage the new government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman’s visit to India in April and potential high-level exchanges indicate a push for improved diplomatic engagement.

Pranay Verma, the current Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, is set to move to Belgium and the European Union. His replacement process is underway, with an official agreement for Trivedi’s appointment already sent by India to Bangladesh. The new envoy will assume his role after necessary formalities are completed.

The timing of Trivedi’s appointment is significant as Bangladesh grapples with an energy crisis due to global conflicts affecting the Strait of Hormuz. Strengthening ties with India is crucial for Bangladesh, given its importance as a key trading partner and strategic neighbor.

India values its relationship with Bangladesh for economic reasons, including trade and investment. Recently, disruptions in visa processes have hindered commercial interactions. During Rahman’s visit, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced plans to normalize business visas, signaling India’s commitment to fostering closer economic ties.
