Supreme Court Expands Rights for Acid Injury Survivors
The Supreme Court recently updated legal protections for individuals who have suffered severe injuries from acid attacks. On May 4, 2026, the court included survivors of forcible acid ingestion under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
Prior to this decision, the law only recognized victims of acid-throwing incidents as “acid attack victims.” The updated ruling now extends legal protections and support services to those who were forced to consume acid. This change ensures that all survivors of severe acid-related injuries are covered under disability rights laws.
The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act was originally designed to help individuals affected by disabilities caused by acid attacks. However, it previously excluded those who had acid forced into their bodies. The Supreme Court’s decision aims to provide equal support and recognition for all victims of such horrific acts.
